Classification Of Cosmetic Raw Materials

Dec 16, 2022

Nowadays, there are various cosmetics, and different types of cosmetics have different raw materials, and the same type of cosmetics have different raw materials due to their different functions.

Therefore, according to the use and function of cosmetic raw materials, Zhongfu Oil & Grease divides the raw materials that make up cosmetics into three categories: "matrix raw materials", "auxiliary raw materials" and "functional raw materials":

(1) Matrix raw materials

Matrix raw materials are the main body of various cosmetics, occupy a large proportion in cosmetic formulas, and determine the functions and properties of cosmetics.

Matrix raw material classification:

Matrix raw materials generally include oily raw materials, powdery raw materials and solvent raw materials.

1. Oily raw materials

It is the main matrix raw material of cosmetics, including natural oily raw materials and synthetic oily raw materials, mainly referring to oils, waxy raw materials, hydrocarbons, fatty acids, fatty alcohols and esters, etc. Grease is the general term for oil and fat, and fat includes vegetable fat and animal fat. The main components of fats and oils are fatty acid glycerides composed of fatty acids and glycerol.

In skin care products, it protects, moisturizes and softens the skin, and in hair products, it plays a role in styling and beautifying hair.

2. Powdery raw materials

Divided into inorganic powdery raw materials, organic powdery raw materials and other powdery raw materials, it is an important matrix raw material for foundation, face powder, eye shadow and other products.

In cosmetics, it mainly plays the role of covering, smoothing, adhesion, absorption and extension.

3. Solvent raw materials

It mainly includes water, alcohols, ketones and ether esters.

In cosmetics, it plays a dissolving role, so that the product has certain properties and dosage forms.

(2) Auxiliary raw materials

Auxiliary raw materials refer to raw materials that stabilize and modify the content itself (aroma, smoothness, color, etc.)

Auxiliary raw materials refer to auxiliary raw materials that provide certain specific functions for cosmetics (such as stability and aroma, smoothness, color modification, etc. for the content itself). The amount added to cosmetics is relatively small, but the effect cannot be ignored. Auxiliary raw materials in cosmetics mainly include flavors and fragrances, pigments and pigments, preservatives and antioxidants, surfactants, water-soluble polymers, etc.

(3) Functional raw materials

Functional raw materials refer to raw materials that endow cosmetics with special functions or strengthen the physiological effects of cosmetics on the skin.

Such as raw materials with moisturizing and repairing skin barrier functions: this kind of raw materials can keep the water content in the stratum corneum of the skin within an appropriate range and reduce the formation of wrinkles. Such as glycerin, allantoin, sodium pyrrolidone carboxylate, lactic acid and sodium lactate, ceramide, and hyaluronic acid.

In addition, there are raw materials that promote cell proliferation and metabolism, antioxidant raw materials, sunscreen raw materials, natural extracts and trace elements with complex effects.
